CRAIGIEBURN MENS SHED

Hume City Council

Craigieburn, VIC

Davidson Architecture was approached by Hume City Council to solve a specific problem. As is often the case, a Mens Shed was proposing new premises but without a good understanding of the regulatory process.

Despite being a ‘shed’ by name, Men’s Shed or Community Sheds are of course Class 9 buildings under the NCC, therefore must be designed to comply with stringent requirements as a public building

Davidson Architecture worked with Hume City Council to prepare a design which whilst being strong, efficient and compliant, also maintained the ‘shed’ atmosphere by use of domestic timber exposed trusses. The trusses and wall framing, which was designed in collaboration with KD Engineering and Dahlsens, provided a cheap way to provide maximum spatial effect on the interior. Simple strip pluggable LED fittings we arranged along the wall ties to give a cheap, highly efficient and interesting lighting effect.
