This project comprised refurbishment of the existing change room pavilion, as well as full demolition and replacement of the existing and well-remembered 1970s Besser block Social Pavilion. The facilities are primarily used by the Tullamarine Football and Cricket Club, and their input was integrated into all phases of the project planning and construction.
The new Pavilion comprises a Social Clubroom with expansive views over the oval which are uninterrupted by any columns or obstructions. In addition there are amenities, kitchen, support areas and umpires/away team change areas. The Social Clubroom opens onto a large undercover external concrete terrace which provides an even better viewing experience, and provides access to the Canteen Servery window. All areas of the Social Clubrooms and viewing terrace are fully Accessible.
A semi commercial kitchen was meticulously planned in consultation with the club to provide for the large numbers of meals which are served daily to patrons in the social room as well as snacks through the external canteen servery window. As a busy local community club, the kitchen and the bar are the hub of the precinct, and are well used.
While strong and robust materials have been selected for all exposed finishes, in line with the AFL Venue guidelines, the exterior of the building has been activated using LED strips in the Tullamarine Demons red and blue Club colours. This is particularly popular and a switch has been strategically located in the main office to allow control of these lights to celebrate home team match highlights. In the immediate future there are plans to install a large PV Solar system to the roof of the building. The roof has been designed as a large relatively flat area to make access for solar safer and easier. Combining the solar coverage to the roof with the ventilated roof space and expansive shading overhangs will allow the building to achieve self-sufficiency during warm summer weather.
While most visitors will find the new pavilion to be the memorable experience, the existing change room pavilion has also received some much needed upgrades, including new amenities with accessible and all gender facilities, expanded storage and an appropriately updated demons colour scheme to the exterior. The Pavilion was opened by the Mayor of Hume City Councillor Jarrod Bell and the MLA for Sunbury Josh Bull on 18th December 2024.
